For Youth Soccer, all of the teams begin with the letter "U" which is short for "Under".  Hence a U8 team would be made up of players under the age of 8 as of August 1st.

In Washington State, we operate on a year that begins on August 1st and ends on July 31st.

The fall of 2008, spring of 2009 and summer of 2009 is one soccer year for us.  For this year, ask yourself, how old was my child on July 31st of 2008. If they were 8 years old last July 31st, then they would be a U9 player for this year.

Starting with U8, teams are divided by gender as well as age, so a GU8 is a team of all girls under the age of 8 as of last July 31st.

A child may play "up" with older children, but not "down" with younger children.  A U7 player can play on a U8 team, but a U8 player cannot play on a U7 team.
